What Is A Manufacturer Representatives?
A Manufacturers' Representative, also known as independent sales representatives or sales agent, is an individual, sales agency or company that sells a manufacturer's products to wholesale distribution and trade dealers.
When a manufacturer hires a manufacturers rep firm, this usually means that a contract is signed between the two companies, which empower the rep to sell, or solicit sales for, the manufacturer's products as an agent in a defined territory. The products are usually ordered directly from the manufacturer, who then pays a sales commission to the manufacturers rep firm. The commission rate varies according to the market and the product type.
Manufacturers' representatives may be especially helpful for any manufacturer looking to get new sales, on going support and more exposure due to their larger outreach from cross over lines they represent.
Why Use Manufacturer Representatives?
More than 50% of American manufacturers utilize commission based independent agents exclusively or along with direct sales forces. In areas such as low voltage electronics, 80% utilize manufacturers reps.
Because they sell numerous lines, agents can introduce a manufacturer's products to more clients than manufacturer sales people. Multiple-line selling produces a wider, better-defined buyer base, leading to an independent rep being in a position to rapidly receive a client and increased revenue.
